String Lake Outlet

Picture of String Lake and the outlet circled in yellowThe outlet structure on String Lake (about 3.5 miles west of Windom) has been in poor shape and the 2024 flooding has caused more damage to the structure.

The Cottonwood SWCD has partnered with Field to Flyway and the MN DNR to assist with potential replacement options of the outlet structure.

A landowner informational meeting was held on July 31, 2024 to inform residents of the String Lake watershed area about the outlet structure’s condition, potential replacement options, and funding opportunities.

Not much is known on the history and ownership of the outlet structure, it is suspected that it was a conservation project during the Depression Era as a work program. The County completed a fix back in 1992. Since then the basin has flooded multiple times, causing stress on the structure and damaging it.

The current structure is comprised of two concrete abutments on either side, with the middle being spanned by 2 x 12 bridge planks held in place with posts.

Another stakeholder meeting was held June 3, 2025 to inform the public of the course of action for the String Lake Outlet structure.

After much discussion with Cottonwood County, Cottonwood SWCD, MN DNR, and stakeholders. It was determined to move forward with the rock arch rapids outlet structure and apply for a Conservation Partners Legacy Grant. The rock arch rapids structure was one of the only options that allowed us to apply for this grant. The Cottonwood SWCD worked in partnership with Field to Flyway Engineering, DNR and other staff to submit the grant request. We will find out if we were selected for funding around December 30, 2025. On December 30, 2025 staff received an email that they would not be announcing those selected for funding by December 30th, DNR did not have a timeframe for when we would hear back.

In late January, we found out that we did not receive the CPL grant. At this time the Commissioners and SWCD staff are looking at potential alternatives or reapplying next year.
